  • Other Relatives

Keenan has a family, but says very little about them. His father and two brothers were murdered while he, his sister, and mother were forced to watch.

Zander was the lead archivist for his sector. His job was mostly supervisory, but that allowed him to choose which particular assignments he wanted to sit in on. His sons were following in his footsteps. Keenan, the youngest of all the siblings, hadn’t yet decided what he would do. His older sister, Penewell, had already started with the ladies in their area to catalogue the memories of those older Ullians who were on their deathbed.

  • Appearance
  • Height: 6 ft. 0 in.
  • Weight: 193 lbs.
  • Eye Color: green
  • Hair Color: reddish brown
  • General Description

Ullians are a humanoid species. Physically, they are similar to Humans. The grey mottling at the young man’s temples that identify him as an Ullian is not there. Neither are the pronounced hairless bulges that typically reside at the temples. *More about this in the History section.* Keenan Joru looks professional at work. He is 6 feet tall and weighs around 193 lbs., depending on what the mess hall has been serving lately. He has a toned, athletic build. He doesn't "work out;" although he does exercise regularly. He has green eyes that tend to look brown at times. His hair is a reddish brown.

  • Psychographics
  • Personality

Gentle, honest, friendly…that’s how most people who come into contact with the Ullians would describe them. As a matter of fact, they describe themselves that way. The Ullians are telepaths with a vested interest in learning the memories of other species in order to catalogue them. Their work is highly important to them. Yet, even with the significance of their work and their fervor, they do not wish to coerce any other species into participating if they are not willing. That is a general statement of the Ullians. Keenan Joru turned against most of that due to a traumatic childhood event. The only thing he kept of his Ullian philosophy was the opposition to memory invasion, which he adapted to his own specifications. *More about this in the History section.* He projects an air of authority that is just short of arrogance. When he speaks, his words are crisp and precisely measured.

  • Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths: As with some Ullians, he possesses the power to enhance and recover lost memories. Ullians are capable of telepathically reading most humanoid species, although other telepathic species such as the Betazoids have difficulty in reading Ullian minds. “Ullian minds are opaque even to full-blooded Betazoid telepaths, so my vantage point is no better than yours, Captain.” (Deanna Troi said this to Jean-Luc Picard in a novel.) He can use his telepathic power to spear into one’s memories to see exactly which memory a specific statement evokes. Grasping those memories, he can then reference them, generally or specifically as the situation deems, and move the conversation where he wants. Another mental ability is that he can broadcast his own emotions to specific individuals.

Weakness: Congeniality ranks about third on his personality scale. Keenan is pompous and comes off as bit arrogant. He can be cold and calculating at times. However, he is not without a slight bit of care. These weaknesses may put him at odds with the more “care free” of the crew. He is always looking over his shoulder and believes everyone has a hidden agenda; regardless of how squeaky clean they seem. Thus, resulting in an initial distrust of whoever he met.

  • Ambitions

He desires to quickly rise through the ranks and become the Captain of a Defiant Class ship.

  • Hobbies and Interests

Seemingly contrary to his personality, he enjoys singing a rousing piece of Klingon opera. The singing heralds back to a time before the murder of his father and brothers. When he sings, he seems to sink back through time and space to a point in his life when things were joyful and peaceful. It helps him deal with what he was forced to watch. Keenan doesn’t partake of the holodeck as much as some of the others. He prefers the solitude of his quarters. Although, engaging in a good battle sim is always fun. He has to rely more on his physical prowess rather than telepathic abilities. Holograms are tough like that.

  • Additional Characteristics

“He seems to meditate for a moment, storing as much of the information in his prodigious memory as possible.” This is a statement in his file from an Academy instructor .

“I was impressed that Keenan greeted everyone by name, without even once consulting a PADD. Then I thought, ‘or is he simply plucking whatever information he needs from each person’s mind.’” This is in his former XO’s report.

Keenan Joru was born to one of those peace-loving, archivist families who sought to use their abilities to keep histories and help amnesia victims. Growing up the youngest of four children had its advantages. He was the baby, the one that did no wrong. Or so his parents thought. Keenan was a mischievous little boy who got into everything! He eventually grew out of that as most children do. His father, Zander, led the research team for his sector. He could choose any assignment he wanted and usually took those that would keep him close to home. He was a family man and his was a very close, tight-knit family…until that dreadful evening, just two days before Keenan’s fourteenth birthday.

[i]Bear in mind that some members of Ullian society still practiced telepathic memory invasion. Most of those were usually the criminals. The Joru family was coming home from dinner that evening when a gang of rebels attacked them telepathically. The rebels demanded all the valuables and then separated Keenan, Penewell, and Nera from the others by a few meters. Keenan, his mother, and older sister were being held tightly by the arms while the rest of the gang physically and mentally beat his father and brothers. The reason they later told the authorities was to get money and valuables and to watch their weak counterparts suffer. After toying with them for some time as a cat does a mouse, the rebels broke their necks and left. They never touched the others.

For months afterwards, Keenan wept. No matter how hard he tried, he could not block the memories of that horrific night. He just couldn’t understand how his father and brothers allowed that gang to beat-up on them! They were powerful telepaths! They could’ve defended themselves easily! He then realized that there must be more he could do with his natural abilities than ‘archive.’ He lost part of his family because they refused to use their telepathic powers for anything besides ‘archiving!’ He started studying his abilities, experimenting on what he could do, and eventually taught himlf more than what the catalogers could have.

Over the next two years, he began to grow distant. He didn’t spend much time around Nera and Penewell anymore. They saw him growing cold and arrogant. His friends and neighbors talked to him. His leaders talked to him. But Keenan didn’t listen to any of them. The archivist ways and Ullian peace-loving philosophy had taken his father and brothers. At least that’s how he saw it. Finally, Nera and Penewell approached him with the same concerns and desires that everyone else had. Keenan was surprised! He thought that if anyone understood him, it was his mom and sister! After all, they had seen the same things he had! First, his friends and neighbors turned against him and his research, then the leaders and his people, and now his very own mother and sister! How could they! Everyone he had ever known and loved was gone. He began to question motivations. Were my friends really trying to help or were they just trying get my memories erased? What made my mom and sister turn against me? They did have several meetings with several of the council members. Thus began Keenan’s initial distrust of people in general. Everyone had a hidden agenda, a secret they didn’t want known.

They deserted him, now it was his time to desert them. He feigned a month-long retreat to one of the moons to cover up his extreme cosmetic surgery. Keenan had the grey mottling removed and his face reshaped to hide the unsightly bulges of his skull. It was all a reminder of what he wanted to leave behind…his people.[i/] After being ostracized by his own family and people for neglecting his heritage and “the archivist ways,” he left his homeworld. His goal was Federation space and Starfleet Command. Long story short, he made it to Earth, applied to and graduated from the Academy and began his career.

“Everybody hides secrets,” he says. And when he wants to, she can see their secrets. Unfortunately, his ability also hampered his progress through the ranks. Certain CO’s and ship Captains were reluctant to promote a telepath who had no qualms about digging into people’s minds and memories to find what they were hiding. No matter if it was for the betterment of Starfleet and the Federation or the mission at hand.

Some called his ability invasive. As an Ullian, he was accustomed to sifting through the clutter within people’s minds – memories of which they were not even consciously aware. He was not “invasive”; he was merely utilizing the abilities he had been born with. Herein lays the aforementioned adaptation of Ullian memory invasion philosophy. If he was ordered to, or if it would protect the crew, or if it would help the mission, or whatever other scenario he could come up with, he would use his ability without hesitation. He’d even used it once or twice to gain the upper hand over a Ferengi in a shrewd business deal. Rarely ever did he deeply probe the minds of his fellow crew. Occasionally, he would grab a name, a favorite color…that type of thing.

After his first assignment, Keenan decided it was time to bury some of his peculiarities underneath the façade of a typical Starfleet Officer. He had always obeyed orders and followed Starfleet regulations and guidelines, but now he tried to make it more obvious. He was the picture of what an officer looked like when following the letter of the law. Sometimes, the higher echelon didn’t seem to like him very much. But he, nonetheless, respected them and had a charming, persuasive demeanor before them regardless of their opinion of him.

    Service Record:
Starfleet Academy – worked for 4 years, 21 years old: Keenan took all the regular classes and specialized in Security. He aced those classes so easily that everyone thought he was cheating. So much so, that Academy administration assigned a Vulcan and Betazoid to follow him through all his classes to ensure there was no cheating. This further developed Keenan’s initial distrust of people and eventually led to his belief that everyone has a hidden agenda. He completed Starfleet Academy, albeit with a few distasteful remarks about his social life on his permanent record, and was promoted to Ensign.

USS Archimedes – Daedalus Class, Assistant Chief of Security and Tactical, served 2 years, 23 years old: His first assignment was as Assistant Sec/Tac Chief aboard the USS Archimedes, commanded by Captain Van Pelt. The Archimedes was an aging vessel; it had been refitted several times. He was there for the last two years of the ship’s active service. It wasn’t all that exciting as everyone knew that the ship was nearing the end of its life. After its decommissioning, Starfleet began transferring the crew. Ensign Joru was transferred to the USS Andronicus, a Sovereign Class Explorer.

USS Andronicus: Keenan was assigned to USS Andronicus as Chief Security/Tactical Officer.
